FOREWORD

“Design Evidence is an invitation to debate, discover and redefine what architecture could be. We believe that bringing together a diversity of voices is a step towards a more inclusive dialogue. 2021 is a fresh chance to promote architecture and design to a broad community of passionate individuals and the greater public.

We have built tremendous resilience over the past 12 months and I strongly believe that our local, regional and global audiences are ready to take virtual and physical engagements to the next level, and why not – have some good fun with it. I look forward to a month-long celebration of creativity this coming October.”

Grassroots X Inclusive Spaces - A Panel @ Crane

by Crane

In land scarce Singapore, spaces have been appropriated to suit various social and personal needs in addition to their original function as buildings, structures and homes. The attitude and approach towards the improvisation of space seems to have become part of the intangible localized identity within Singapore. Grassroots X Inclusive Spaces takes a look at the angle of how we create spaces within spaces to make life a little more colourful.

Moderated by Shaiful Risan (Arts Associate of Crane) this session will have a live interchange with Sharon Tan (formerly from The Projector, currently an educator), Zakir Hossain Khokan (former journalist, two time winner of Migrant Poetry Competition) and Chris Leow (Bootle’s, Nutopia open community garden), this will be a (grass)rudimentary approach on the topic and inclusivity narrative.

by Citizen Adventures

The only legalized red light district in Singapore. From the food to the vice, we’ve seen and heard all about it. But have you ever walked through it all? Faced with issues like overcrowding from the influx of foreign workers and the social stigma of prostitution long before the rest of Singapore read it in the news, Geylang has had its share of adventures. Come discuss and witness first hand these issues and the resultant social and environmental impacts.

Maximum 20 pax; minimum take up is 5 pax

Citizen Adventures

We design experiences for citizens to understand neighbourhoods as social ecosystems and their interconnectedness as individuals relative to these systems, and the issues within.

Our involvement regardless big or small, will effect change as a collective.

Beyond raising awareness about neighbourhood-specific issues, we aim to inspire more people to re-examine their own neighbourhoods and realize the need to reframe how we live.

Inspired by his own neighbourhood and family, Yinzhou started walking tours in Geylang and Dakota Crescent, organising events & initiatives advocating for social issues.

Possessing a major in tourism from Murdoch University, Yinzhou recently graduated from Singapore Management University (SMU) with a Masters of Tri-Sector Collaboration.

Yinzhou upholds the ethos of “loving thy neighbour- forming long-lasting friendships with migrant workers and elderly. On weekends, he gives free haircuts with backalleybarbers. For his efforts, he was awarded the Singapore Youth Award in 2017 and featured in the National Day Parade in 2018.

SILA Kayak N Klean Archifest Edition

by Singapore Institute of Landscape Architects (SILA)

Much of a landscape architect’s work involves an intimate knowledge of the natural environment, the conservation our natural habitats and the biodiversity, while designing and integrating liveable spaces together with “green” and “blue” infrastructure.

This coastal kayak and cleanup will help raise awareness of the profession’s work, Singapore’s natural ecosystem at Seletar Island, Sg. Simpang and Sg. Khatib Bongsu areas, and the environmental challenges in coastal pollution and erosion. It is also an effort to inculcate a sense of biophilia (love of nature) in the general populace, to help drive the Singapore’s “City in Nature” vision.

Participants must be at least 10 years old.

Singapore Institute of Landscape Architects (SILA)

The Singapore Institute of Landscape Architects (SILA) is a non-profit organization representing the Landscape Architectural professional in Singapore. It was established in 1985 to advance the science and art of Landscape Architecture and the theory and practice of landscape, environmental, and urban design; to promote research and education therein; and to create and maintain a high standard of professional qualification.

Le Corbusier: A Legacy

by Alliance Française de Singapour, RT+Q, Singapore University of Technology and Design, and G8A Architecture & Urban Planning

Le Corbusier is a French-Swiss architect, designer, painter, urban planner, writer, and one of the pioneers of modern architecture. The name, Le Corbusier, is a different version of his maternal grandfather’s surname, Lecorbésier. The name translates into English as “the crow like one”, a name he chose in 1920, an act creates a self. Le Corbusier was born Charles-Édouard Jeanneret in Switzerland and became a French citizen in 1930.

Le Corbusier is noted for inventing a new architectural language. This architecture gives way to light while modernising architectural techniques and technology with an architecture that develops upwards towards meeting modern people’s social and personal needs with functional spaces.

“l’Esprit Nouveau (a new spirit)”. His aptitude for cross-fields practices created unmatched ambition in his time and provided timeless methods that are wildly applicable and applauded for architects and artists to this day. Though he was not always understood in his time as a visionary, his architectural, artistic, and literary heritage is immense today.

Le Corbusier’s endeavours in the east breathe a new life into the versatility of architecture, integrating the practice of intercultural understanding between people and spaces. This is reflected in his realisation of the Chandigarh plan and key city buildings within India.

Through this exhibition, the different facets of Le Corbusier, a day of his life and the ideas that help shape the world we see and are in today. We see the very disciplined life: painting and sketching in the morning, working on the models and drawings on architecture and urban projects in the afternoon, gathering and thinking of life in the present and future with the visions of future lifestyles and cities in the evening.

In our new normal with the pandemic, the ideas of Le Corbusier offer provocative opportunities for reflection. His visions for the La Cité Radieuse – the Radiant City – realised in the Unités d’Habitation in Marseille, open a path to looking at our own living spaces in Singapore in the 21st century where we seek new ways to create a safe and healthy environment for us all.

This exhibition is co-curated by RT+Q and the Singapore University of Technology and Design, G8A Architecture & Urban Planning

Alliance Française de Singapour, RT+Q, Singapore University of Technology and Design, and G8A Architecture & Urban Planning

Alliance Française de Singapour is the only place in Singapore where you can enjoy a truly unique and authentic French experience. It is a local non-profit educational and cultural organization, affiliated to the international network of Alliance Française.

With more than 800 locations in 132 countries, the Alliance Française is undoubtedly the world’s largest network of any cultural association. With a strong board and a mixed team of Singaporeans and French, and more than 4,000 members of all ages, the Alliance Française de Singapour fulfills its mission of teaching the French language and promoting French and Francophone cultures by offering various actions in its language centre, its gallery (la galerie), its theatre (le théâtre) and its library (la médiathèque).

EGC Virtual Series: Upcycling Fruit Peels into Eco-enzymes

by Edible Garden City

Food waste accounts for about one-tenth of the waste that Singaporeans generate. There’s both good and bad news to the issue:

  • The good – we are on the right track; we have reduced our food waste generated by 11% from 2019 to 2020.
  • The bad – there is still more that needs to be done. But reducing our waste doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom. There’s fun to be had!

Join us and turn food waste into gold, as Edible Garden City’s trainers prepare you to upcycle your citrus skins into eco-friendly plant fertilisers and enzyme cleaners!

Swiss Embassy Workshop - Innovative sustainable design and solutions in building and construction

by Embassy of Switzerland in Singapore, Deloitte Centre for the Edge Asia, Studio SKLIM, Häring, Affordable Abodes, Hilti, EHL Campus (Singapore)

We are living at the cusp of no-return with regards to climate change. To avert acceleration of climate disasters, significant coordinated global efforts are needed. The building and construction industry contributes to about 40% of the global CO2 emissions.

With over 50% of the global population currently living in cities, rising to over an estimated 70% by 2050, the demand for construction will not abate. How can we reduce the overall carbon footprint of the building and construction industry over the coming decades?

Join us in exploring all domains of sustainable design and solutions in the building and construction industry! These include i.a. building material, circularity and re-use, design for reuse, modular design, and green financing.

We invite designers, material scientists, architects, green financiers, and enthusiasts to participate. The conversation outcomes will ultimately lead to a physical manifestation in the form of a pavilion.
