Theme for ArchiTours ’09
“Architecture for Humanity,” the theme of ArchiFest ’09, raises two pertinent questions: “What is the fundamental purpose of creating architecture?” and “What is the basic role of an architect?” Singapore’s vibrant past has caused and witnessed a lot of changes in the local architectural scene. In this year’s ArchiTours, we trace the changing demands placed on architects in Singapore in the areas of housing, entertainment, and community. We also explore the challenges that may be faced by architects in the future. We look at architecture from the past and present and ask, amid the myriad changes, is there something constant? Perhaps, in one way or another, architecture will always respond to the needs of the community.
About ArchiTours:
ArchiTours began in 2007 with the intention of promoting discourse about the influence of architecture on the social context, and cultivating an appreciation for design itself. Student-directed from the outset, ArchiTours continues to be run by students of architecture. Emphasis has been placed on “reading” instead of merely looking – engaging and questioning extents of relevance and the suitability of architectural typologies to Singapore, and assessing how successfully these typologies have been grafted onto our city. Studying and gaining a sense of understanding of architecture in Singapore are the key goals of ArchiTours.
