17.30–18.30 Talk with Kaoru Mende and guest speakers (details to be confirmed)
18.30–19.15 Break with refreshments
19.30–21.00 Boat tour on Singapore river (tour area details to be confirmed)

For ArchiFest ’09, the Lighting Detectives will observe and question Singapore’s waterfront lighting. How does waterfront lighting contribute to creating a space for a pleasant evening stroll along the river? What attracts us towards the waterfront, and how can light help to enhance this atmosphere? Glare, reflections of light on the water, and the intertwining of light and shadow with the stillness of water are some of the aspects this exploration will be seeking. The event will be a combination of a talk on the subject followed by a boat tour along the Singapore River to observe, contemplate, and marvel at the lighting environment when seen from the water.

Originally hailing from Tokyo, the Lighting Detectives is a non-profit group engaged in observing and recording the international nightscape. The group was established in 1990 by Kaoru Mende, the principal of Lighting Planners Associates – a lighting design firm. Its vision is to increase awareness about “lighting cultures” through practical methods and fieldwork. The group regularly goes out into urban lighting environments to observe light, rather than relying on theories. Though the group began with a simple question about the present status of our cities and environment at night, the Lighting Detectives have branched out into many activities – organising workshops, forums, exhibitions, and interactions with various sections of society in developing an understanding of lighting cultures and how they affect us all.

The Lighting Detectives follow five rules:

  1. Get angry with surrounding light pollution
  2. Undertake deep and accurate observation of light on site
  3. Do be impressed with artistic lighting
  4. Calmly detect inspiring lighting designs
  5. Continuously accumulate experiences in lighting

Lighting Planners Associates (LPA) is a group of specialist engineers and designers who contribute to both architectural and luminous culture through the creation of a superb luminous environment. It was established by the internationally renowned lighting designer Kaoru Mende in 1990 in Tokyo, and its Singapore office was incorporated in 2000.

InnoVillage@SP is a new innovation village at Singapore Polytechnic where academics, researchers, and industry partners from all disciplines can converge and innovate in Living Labs.

InnoVillage@SP is designed to be a “bright green” building that is both intelligent and green. Constructed by “recycling” a prior development called Phase Z.RO, InnoVillage@SP incorporates many green features such as the National Solar Repository, SP’s Green Gallery, photovoltaic panels, sunlight tubes, and smart lighting that will be on display in an Interactive Innovation Trail.

This physical infrastructure will then be “layered over” in phases. These layers of ambient intelligence, cloud computing, and intelligent energy management will work in unison to create unique user experiences and manage energy conservation through these experiences.

The cross into the new millennium saw a huge increase in the popularity of iconic design, as well as a wider recognition of the value of creativity in both economic and human terms. For architects, the embrace of creativity in the city is about more than producing architectural icons. It is also about designing for surprise and delight – creating architecture that brings nourishment to its occupants while also perhaps setting and reflecting trends. In this tour we seek out some places and spaces of retreat, entertainment, and recreation that have delighted their occupants. Though these are manifestations of a society of consumption, they also give something back to the people of the city.

It is neither the Urban nor the Rural, it is both. New architecture cannot come out of old planning! Cities of Asia, behold the countryside, and imagine the infinite possibilities. See one space, not two.
– Tay Kheng Soon, from his blog on Rubanisation

To be conducted by practising architect and adjunct professor at the National University of Singapore’s School of Architecture, Tay Kheng Soon, the Rubanisation Workshop will begin with a briefing on the concept of Rubanisation. The idea of mixing the rural with the urban offers the possibility of a shift from the old industrial economy to a new economy that offers a new creative work/life balance. Workshop participants will be encouraged to imaginatively address the design of the “spatialand” using as many local materials as possible, such as bamboo, rammed earth and earth bricks, stones, thatch, woven bamboo, small brushwood timber, recycled materials, plastic, tyres, bottles, tin cans, etc. Participants are to form teams and present their work in the form of freehand drawings and models to the public and the press.

Invitations will be extended to embassy representatives from Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, the Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam; as well ASEAN secretariat representatives.

This is a 2 day workshop and participants are required to attend both days.

This workshop will highlight – in a nutshell – the security considerations that increasingly need to be married with architectural design. Following the principle of FFF, this is ideally conceived and interwoven with the architecture at an early stage. Through an educational display depicting trends in security situations, workshop participants will discover how the need to create safe living spaces for our families and the general population has heightened. A short video presentation will point out the essentials of security design that today’s architect cannot avoid in the quest for practical and people-friendly architecture.

Learn what goes on behind the scenes during the development of iconic projects, as a security consultant shares first-hand insights into how security experts work closely with architects to provide critical input. Often necessary to fulfill industry standards and requirements, this process of input involves understanding concepts such as the Missing Column Strategy, Stand-off Distance, Mass Casualty Prevention, etc. Workshop participants will quickly apply what they have picked up in the interactive exercise that follows the presentations.

Programme:
Video and exhibition: 2.00pm – 3.00pm
Live presentation: 3.00 – 3.30pm
Interactive exercise: 3.30pm – 4.00pm
Q&A: 4.00pm – 4:30pm

What defines a lighting object? Would an architect view a lighting object differently from a fashion designer, or a product designer? These are an open ended questions which all 25 invited designers would need to probe and answer for the event. Whenlightswork collective hopes that by organizing a design cum charity sale event, this would help spread a little cheer amongst the community and let the designers contribute our creative works towards helping others in need. The Straits Times Pocket Money Fund had been named as the Charity Recipient for the event’s proceeds.

For the inaugural Unidentified Lighting Object (U.L.O) 2009, which is organized by whenlightswork collective and kindly sponsored by IKEA Singapore, we would be seeing a total of 25 invited designers, from celebrated creatives to emerging designers, all across different design disciplines, work their magic on a conventional IKEA item they would each choose. As part of the runway challenge (pardon the pun), the theme, “Masak Masak”, had been proposed. All designers are invited to translate an intimate part of their childhood memories into a tangible story through their designs.

With the interesting mix of emerging and renowned designers, coupled with the support from IKEA Singapore, one would certainly be anticipating a lot of “Unidentified Lighting Object”s from this experiment.

An exhibition cum sale of all the designs would be held at the Tampines IKEA store, from 24th of October to 31st October. Admission is free.
All sale proceeds would be donated to charity.

Organized by whenlightswork collective
Supported and sponsored by IKEA Singapore

About whenlightswork:
Whenlightswork design collective is started by a group of Singaporean architectural lighting designers who are eager to share their passion and enthusiasm on lighting design with the local design community. The collectives aimed to promote local lighting design awareness through collaborations with other collectives, as well as, to demystify the magic of light for all.

1.
INTRODUCTION
1.1 “New Ideas for Recyclable Housing” is an architectural design competition organised by SIA in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity, with prize money graciously sponsored by Lee Foundation. It serves as one of the flagship events for promoting the theme of ArchiFest ‘09: Architecture for Humanity.
1.2 The background of the project is as follows:

“The many natural disasters that the world experiences every year pose a unique challenge to housing solution providers. In most disasters, residential properties will be destroyed, resulting in masses of homeless victims. The immediate response has always been to provide some sort of temporary shelters, typically tents of all shapes and sizes. This is typically followed by the provision of semi-permanent structures like wooden houses, or Styrofoam-sandwiched panel houses. Permanent housing solutions will be implemented many months after the disaster first struck. For example, hundreds and thousands of people in Sichuan now live in rows of Styrofoam-sandwiched panel houses, awaiting for permanent houses to be built.

Habitat for Humanity is an international Christian housing charity, focusing on providing housing solutions to the needy of all race, language, religion or nationalities. It has thus far been focused on providing permanent housing solutions. At the disaster areas in which Habitat operates, it has been observed that there is no connection between elements of temporary and permanent housing solutions. Temporary and semi-permanent structures like tents and wall panels are simply dismantled, and discarded, resulting in great waste of resources, and damage to the environment.

The challenge is to find a design for temporary or semi-permanent shelter unit, which can also be incorporated as part of a permanent housing solution. The material used for temporary or semi-permanent housing solution can thus be recycled into permanent use, resulting in great cost saving, and environmental protection.”

2.
OBJECTIVES

The key objectives of the competition are:

  1. To create a proposal for a prototype housing that can be implemented on actual disaster relief sites. The primary idea is about the design of a temporary shelter for housing victims post crisis, which can then be later “recycled” (- converted or incorporated) into permanent housing structures for these victims.

  2. To encourage creative and original design ideas for temporary relief shelters that can be adapted as part of the permanent housing solutions; so as to develop purposeful, buildable, mobile and housing prototypes, which address situations stated in Part 1.2, and embrace the spirit of the ArchiFest ‘09 theme: Architecture for Humanity.

  3. To promote an integrated approach in the design of post crisis shelters that addresses short term fundamental needs, as well as long term sustenance issues in the form of permanent housing solutions, so as to aid emergency situations, as well as support social and community development in a holistic and sustainable manner.
3.

Any competitor wishing to obtain further information on the brief or terms and conditions may send queries in English and in writing by email to the Secretariat at design_competition@sia.org.sg.

Such email shall clearly state “New Ideas for Recyclable Housing” as the subject heading. Only upon receipt of an acknowledgement email sent by the competition secretariat shall the query be officially registered for a response at the Competition Question-and-Answer webpage.

You can also fill in this online enquiry form.

  11.2

Q1) Location of Site - Empty or Occupied Site?
A: There is no restriction if it is an empty site or one filled with buildings.

Q2) Limitation on Design Size - 45 sqm or flexible for participant to decide?
A: The gross area of 45 sqm is derived from analyzing average sizes of permanent shelters. It serves as a guide, to work like a basic module, that can be expanded to 90 and even 135sqm. Variation from this foot print is permissible as long as the proposal fulfills its function as permanent housing solutions.

Q3. Cost for temporary or semi-permanent housing - materials, labor and machinery cost
This ranges from about a hundred dollars for a bamboo-based transitional housing in Nepal, to the cost of a disaster relief tent, or styro-foam houses we see in construction sites in Singapore.

Q4. Duration take to build
A: This varies with the adopted shelters. Tentages are easily put up in a very short time. Styrofoam-sandwitched transitional houses take a while longer, but could be constructed within a day.

Q5 Person per square meter Ratio
For the Chengdu earthquake, a typical family is assigned to a place no larger than 25 sq meter.

Q6. Maintainence of Completed Housing
A: Maintenance is often done by respective government.

Q7. Does geographical context makes a difference
A: Absolutely. The other aspect is cultural, as victims may pick and choose the type of shelters they want (e.g. they may not like steel frame houses). In places like Myanmar and Nepal, bamboo structures are preferred since they can be collected locally.

Q8. Typical basic necessity to be provided by the housing charity
A: Habitat aims to provide a decent place for everyone to call home and is typically involved in permanent housing solutions, many months after the initial disaster. They are involved in fund raising to finance the construction of the housing.

Q9: Publicity by Charity to disseminate news or request for aids from the world.
A: The publicity channels include public events, the media, internet, direct-mail appeals, etc.

Q10. Types of material aids typically required
A: It start from a shelter to shield one from the elements, and sanitation and water provision. Habitat often deal with the housing, while other NGOs deal with sanitation and water. Every case and disaster is different, as the geographical locations and cultural expectations are different, but the idea is always to settle the people down permanently as the ultimate goal.

Q11. Furniture (e.g. bed) and dimensions
A: There is no restriction to the provision of furniture such as beds in the design of shelters. It is up to the creativity and innovation of the designers to propose integrated furniture or simply spaces to accomodate different furniture. A generic size of a single bed is about 2000mm in length and 1000mm in width.

Q12) Wet sanitary spaces - integrated or separate facilities
A: There is no restriction of whether the wet areas should be provided within or outside of the shelters. Designers are free to propose how these spaces are designed as integrated or separate facilities from the shelters.

Q13) Dimension Base Units
A: Dimension base units must be in metric system (metres and millimetres) instead of imperial system (yards and inches).

12.
DUTIES AND OBLIGATIONS OF PARTICPANTS AND AWARD WINNERS

The AA (Architectural Association) Singapore Workshop is a 10-day event that provides participants with a taste of the AA’s design pedagogy. The program which started as a pilot visiting schools program by the AA in 2006 has since inspired similar visiting programs in other cities. Conducted by Nathalie Rozencwajg and Michel da Costa Gonçalves – who are both tutors at the AA and founders of rare architecture – and sponsored by Singapore Polytechnic and Design Singapore and supported by URA’s A+UDE’s program; the workshop proposes a series of study cycles, which has taken participants through explorations of component-based design (Breeding Design- 2006) to reflections on vertical growth (Vertical Strategies for Urban Living – 2007, 2008) and finally leading onto this year’s strategic agenda on Designed Geographies.

Through developing cross-referenced layers of urban conditions to produce ramified readings of the city, the workshops investigated experimental ways of observing the city, informed by an introduction to contemporary methods of physical and digital mapping, modelling and advanced design processes and research. Each group approached the shared agenda from different perspectives, using different techniques, to give a broad introduction to creative design processes, critical forms of thinking and urban research. In essence, the workshop was tailored to provide innovative and unexpected ways in considering and projecting further urban development as well as an insight into the school’s culture of design and debate.

The retrospective exhibition at SIA features works from the four years of this event exhibiting models and video presentations. It will run from the 19 – 30 October 2009 at the SIA Theatrette.

Join Sri Lankan architect C. Anjalendran and author David Robson for the launch of the book Anjalendran: Architect of Sri Lanka.

Over the past two decades, Anjalendran has established himself as one of Sri Lanka’s leading architects. His buildings have a simple directness and although totally modern in spirit, they acknowledge the rich traditions of Sri Lanka. Anjalendran’s architecture is about using the simplest of materials to create magic, and nowhere is this more apparent than in the series of projects that he has built at rock-bottom cost for SOS Children’s Villages.

As one architect was heard to remark during a visit to the SOS Children’s Village located in Galle: “Why can’t the rest of Sri Lanka be like this?”

Anjalendran has worked from home during the past twenty-five years, never employing more than four student assistants at any one time. He has no office, no secretary, no car, no mobile phone, no bank account, and has never signed a contract with either a client or a builder.

Author David Robson is well known as the author of a comprehensive monograph on the architect Geoffrey Bawa, a book that draws heavily on Anjalendran’s archives and reminiscences. Robson has written at length about the development of Sri Lankan architecture since independence.

In this tour, we take a look at how various types of buildings exude the power with which they are bestowed, and make their presence felt. Some buildings shout their presence from their rooftops; others are poised quietly on their strong foundations. In this tour, we explore how institutions of various kinds adapt to new architectural languages while remaining functionally relevant. We also look into buildings as disembodied shells infused with new uses. Furthermore, we see how sometimes, old is simply beautiful – and relevant.

In July 2008, DP Architects sponsored a team of fifteen to Yogyakarta, Indonesia to participate in Habitat for Humanity’s (HFH) “Global Village Trip”. While they were there, the team of volunteers helped to build a home for a family in need of decent and affordable shelter. In this sharing session, members of the team [is this correct?] will offer insights into their experience.

In Yogyakarta, the team worked hand-in-hand with its home partner (the beneficiary of the house) to build the home brick-by-brick – from the laying of the foundations, to the tying of rebars, to the mixing of the concrete. It was labor-intensive work. However, all the muscle aches were assuaged by the warmth of the locals and various R&R trips the team managed to squeeze in. They visited the UNESCO World Heritage site Borobudur, Prambanan Complex, and Cho-De community settlement (1992 Aga Khan Award for Architecture recipient).

At the invitation of Henry Feriadi (the director-in-charge of HFH Yogyakarta), the team also gave a presentation on its green architecture award to architecture students at Duta Wacana Christian University. The team found it rewarding to meet all the enthused young minds!

The DP team looks forward to sharing its experiences during ArchiFest, and perhaps, spurring others to make similar trips.

“The impossible exists only until we find a way to make it possible”

“After twenty years of exploration, I have decided to share more of what I have done with the younger generation,” Mike Horn has said. “I’m just an explorer who wants to keep my playground clean.”

Mike Horn is recognised worldwide as one of the greatest modern day explorers. He began his journey by setting challenges for himself – swimming the rivers, sailing the oceans, surviving alone in different environments and in extreme weather conditions, confronting all elements of nature, and continually pushing himself to his physical and mental limits.

“The problem today is that we are loosing contact with nature, forgetting its beauty, and most importantly, its overwhelming power,” he has said. In 2008, he began his Pangaea (pan- + γαῖα ~ gaia), “‘earth, land’”) expedition, which aims to “cultivate respect for the environment and the protection of its resources for the sake of future generations.” Hear Mike discuss his Pangaea journey, and be inspired to redefine, rediscover, and make a difference for the world.

Melvin H J Tan is an architect and a photographer. In this special seminar for ArchiFest, he will present and discuss both his architectural and photography works, and offer insights gained from practice in both professions.

Melvin will discuss the issues pertaining to the relationship between the architect as author and photographer – as “representer” of the same architectural work. How does the architect convey the design intent to a photographer? And how does the photographer respond to the spatial qualities of the architecture? Melvin will also offer technical advice and tips to architects seeking to document their own work, or photo-enthusiasts interested in the built-form. The talk is for architects who want to learn to stretch their mileage with a photographer, and for photographers seeking to bring their architectural photography to the next level.

Melvin is a director of LAUD Architects Pte Ltd, which undertakes a range of local and foreign projects, including residential, civic, and hotel developments. The firm also specialises in churches. Melvin’s architectural photography works have been featured in Architectural Review, Casabella, Hinge, AV monografias, Singapore Architect, and other publications.

Melvin will be available for (architecture and photography) portfolio reviews at the seminar.

In this tour, we explore issues pertaining to our way of living. How has it changed over the years? How has the architect responded to these changes? When Singapore first became independent, there was a pressing need to provide housing. Hence, the practical solutions of the SIT and HDB flats. The increased appreciation for “designer” homes has seen the development of high-rise sky apartments and SOHO-style living. Simultaneously, there has been a growing trend of conservation coupled with the creation of new extensions. The result is the creation of some quaint and exquisite spaces to call home. This tour presents a spectacle of today’s modern housing, and at the same time, observes the changes within our community.

Theme for ArchiTours ’09

“Architecture for Humanity,” the theme of ArchiFest ’09, raises two pertinent questions: “What is the fundamental purpose of creating architecture?” and “What is the basic role of an architect?” Singapore’s vibrant past has caused and witnessed a lot of changes in the local architectural scene. In this year’s ArchiTours, we trace the changing demands placed on architects in Singapore in the areas of housing, entertainment, and community. We also explore the challenges that may be faced by architects in the future. We look at architecture from the past and present and ask, amid the myriad changes, is there something constant? Perhaps, in one way or another, architecture will always respond to the needs of the community.

About ArchiTours:

ArchiTours began in 2007 with the intention of promoting discourse about the influence of architecture on the social context, and cultivating an appreciation for design itself. Student-directed from the outset, ArchiTours continues to be run by students of architecture. Emphasis has been placed on “reading” instead of merely looking – engaging and questioning extents of relevance and the suitability of architectural typologies to Singapore, and assessing how successfully these typologies have been grafted onto our city. Studying and gaining a sense of understanding of architecture in Singapore are the key goals of ArchiTours.

Presenter: William S W Lim (with book launch by Richard Hassell)
Programme
3:00–3:30pm Registration of attendees
3:30–3:35pm Introduction by ArchiFest Chairman, Seah Chee Huang
3:35–3:40pm Opening speech by SIA President, Ashvinkumar
3:40–4:40pm Lecture title: Impact of New World Order on Architecture and Urbanism with Special Reference to Singapore
4:40–5:00pm Q&A
5:00-5.10pm Book Launch “Asian Design Culture” (edited by William Lim) by Mr Richard Hassell
5:10-6.30pm Reception, refreshments and signing of books
6:30pm End of Reception

Is the emerging New World Order inevitable and does it signal the end of neo-liberalism? Over the past few decades, we have been told by lots of neo-liberal rhetoric that there is no alternative to the exploitative free market, overboard de-regulations and excessive privatised world that privilege the elite minority with incredible monetary rewards at the expense of the community-at-large. Furthermore, it must be recognised that much is rapidly changing in recent years, and even after global economic recovery, the world will not be the same again. In this lecture, I wish first to analyse six major causes and characteristics of the emerging New World Order. They are: - 1) global financial turmoil and depth of disruption; 2) new power balance and pace of change; 3) climatic crisis and sustainability; 4) new knowledge and applicability; 5) re-conceptualising globality; and 6) democracy, social justice and citizen participation. Second, I wish to identify and analyse their impact and implications on urban policies and architectural design directions. And third, to project their possible relevance to Singapore. (city X is where the lecture is being delivered)

William S W Lim
William S W Lim graduated from the Architectural Association (AA) London and continued his graduate studies at the Department of City and Regional Planning, Harvard University. His professional work involved architecture, planning, and development economics. He was principal architect at Malayan Architects Co-Partnership from 1960 to 1967, Design Partnership (later renamed DP Architects) from 1967 to 1981, and William Lim Associates from 1981 to 2002. Lim is president of AA Asia and chairman of Asian Urban Lab. Presently, Lim is Adjunct Professor of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University, Australia. He was conferred a Doctor of Architecture Honoris Causa by RMIT University in 2002. Currently, Lim writes and lectures on a wide range of subjects relating to architecture, urbanism, and culture in Asia, as well as on current issues relating to the postmodern, glocality, and social justice. His recent publications include Asian Ethical Urbanism: A Radical Postmodern Perspective (2005) and Asian Alterity: With Special Reference to Architecture and Urbanism through the Lens of Cultural Studies (2008).

SIA members are invited to participate in Build LONDON Live 2009 – a unique international event that will mix a virtual collaboration, an architectural competition, and a Building Information Modelling (BIM) exhibition. It will be held over three days from 6–9 October and is destined to become the largest real-time engineering showcase and collaboration ever to have been held. This 48-hour virtual design collaboration starts at midday (London time) on Tuesday, 6 October and runs through to a finish at midday (London Time) on Thursday, 8 October. The concluding press conference, also delivered online via a video link, will be hosted at the Building Centre in Central London at 4pm (London Time) on Friday, 9 October.

Build LONDON Live is a collision of master-planning, engineering, and political ideas for regeneration. It uses the latest BIM techniques to create detailed designs and proposals. Teams will submit an unprecedented amount of content including 3D models, imagery, movies, and analysis results, and show how traditional design methods are enhanced by BIM to everyone’s benefit.

Build LONDON Live demands higher standards than the typical conceptual storyboard-style presentations submitted to most architectural competitions. Teams will upload multi-discipline Building Information Models that will include architectural and structural designs, building services designs and calculations, sun and wind analysis, energy analysis and consumption data, constructability analysis, and much more. All this will be made possible by the full use of interoperable collaborative techniques and software platforms. The standard of work anticipated from the participating teams is exceptionally high and is expected to set new standards for what can be achieved in 48 hours.

The design brief for Build LONDON Live 2009 is for a completely hypothetical mixed use development consisting of a hotel, and a commercial and housing development on an artificial island in the Thames Estuary. Each team will be allocated a site within the Build LONDON Live master plan. All sites are approximately the same size and will have a similar aspect and advantage within the master plan. Teams will be asked to create the designs and Building Information Models for a scheme with a mix of uses in accordance with the design brief.

Teams will be free to incorporate the design requirements into multiple buildings or a single building, but all buildings must be positioned within the boundaries of the site and located in space on the context models that will be provided. Although details of the design brief will be announced prior to the event, certain key information is being withheld until noon, 6 October 2009.

The Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA) and the National Library Board (NLB) are jointly organising “Singapore Architecture 101” – one of a series of “Singapore 101” talks. These talks will showcase the various facets of Singapore heritage and culture. One of the main objectives is to keep the public enlightened and updated on all things Singapore.

“Singapore Architecture 101” provides an insight to the changing landscapes of Singapore, the development of architectural design in Singapore, and the achievements of our local architects. Apart from highlighting Singapore’s award-winning architectural designs and Singaporean architects who have won numerous accolades (both locally and internationally), the talk will retrace some of the forgotten landmarks of Singapore to reveal architectural symbols that truly represent Singapore. Moving with times, the works of our local architects have also emphasised the importance of functionality, innovation, aesthetic, and the ability to be eco-friendly and energy-efficient. “Singapore Architecture 101” is a chance to marvel at the works of our local architects and our local architecture.

Artist’s synopsis

“I will be drawing on site for two weeks in the allocated space at the foyer of the National Library as part of a fringe event for ArchiFest ’09. The drawing will begin on 5 October 2009 and will continue until 19 October 2009.

“My work examines my interest in the city’s transitory spaces, such as the void decks of public housing, alleys, shopping malls, and Mass Rapid Transit stations. It is an important documentation of changes in Singapore’s urban spaces. The city has been transformed so fast that sometimes when we walk through public spaces, we lose our bearings. However, at the same time, one feels a sense of unfamiliar familiarity. My drawings provide an outlet for the audience to stop, rest, contemplate, and be aware of their relationship with the city’s spaces.

“The project also looks at the performative aspects of the drawing process as I work on site in the presence of the audience.

“My drawing at ArchiFest ’09 will be based on the architectural spaces and elements of the National Library, as well as the transitory spaces of Singapore’s public spaces.

“Charcoal will be my major medium. The drawing will be done on paper mounted on the exhibition scaffolding installed by ArchiFest.”

Calling all design ideas!

Everyone needs a place to hang out beyond the four walls of the home – a place to chat with friends, to be inspired, to find rest. What is your vision for the renewal of the void decks of the heartlands?

About Operation Void Deck

The Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA) presents Operation Void Deck – an open competition to design an architectural intervention at the void decks of public housing estates.

The competition has been jointly organised by the SIA, the Marine Parade Town Council, the National Library Board, and Hong Leong Holdings Limited. It aims to generate unique, exciting ideas about how to bring something more to the lives of residents, and show how architecture and design can impact upon society.

For this inaugural round of the competition, Block 51 Marine Terrace [MAP] will serve as a site to envision how the ground level of the block might be used to contribute to needs of the surrounding community.

Competition Guidelines

Entries should present a vision of how to encourage community interaction and enhance the quality of life of the residents across generations, especially the elderly.

The competition is open to all, including architects, interior designers, students, and people with great ideas.

Design ideas could range from a furniture installation to the remodeling of an area within or surrounding the void deck at Block 51 Marine Terrace.

The envisioned proposal should factor in a construction budget of $30,000.

Competition Brief

Refer to the APPENDIX for the full set of competition guidelines.

Prizes

The winning design entry will stand the chance to be further developed with support from SIA, and may potentially be built at Block 51 Marine Terrace in early 2010. Special mentions will be exhibited in an ideas gallery.

Strangelets commissioned Joycelyn Shu, genius food stylist and blogger to create an installation inspired by the art of food presentation. We challenged Joycelyn to make use of traditional decorative techniques such as icing, piping, and table-arrangement on non-edible media. We asked ourselves: what can interior design learn from other arts of the interior?

Joycelyn ornamented a triptych panel by piping not confectionary icing, but construction putty—using her techniques of food ornamentation in the context of home décor. The amazing result provides the backdrop for a collage of familiar household items used in creative new ways.

An opening tea will be held with the Artist, as she describes a little bit about her installation, and what she does. She will even give some tips to those who might want to try it at home.

The Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA) and the Peranakan Museum (TPM) are jointly organising a series of talks on Architecture and Heritage to be held over three Friday evenings in October (2, 9 October and 11 December 2009).

One of the key objectives is to educate and promote Singapore architecture to the public. The series aims to provide an insight to:

  • The role that gallery or museum architecture plays in establishing a context for experiencing exhibitions
  • The ways in which exhibitions are shaped and determined by architecture
  • The ways time, and thus familiarity, impact on one’s perception of the relationship between a building and the collection within it
  • The debate about whether some museum/gallery architecture is essentially inhospitable to art.

New Ideas for Recyclable Housing is an architectural design competition organised by SIA in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity, with prize money graciously sponsored by the Lee Foundation. It serves as one of the flagship events for promoting the theme of ArchiFest ’09: Architecture for Humanity.

The many natural disasters that the world experiences every year pose a unique challenge to housing-solution providers. In most disasters, residential properties will be destroyed, resulting in masses of homeless victims. The immediate response has always been to provide some sort of temporary shelters – typically tents of all shapes and sizes. This is usually followed by the provision of semi-permanent structures such as wooden houses, or Styrofoam-sandwiched panel houses. Permanent housing solutions will be implemented many months after the disaster first struck. For example, hundreds and thousands of people in Sichuan now live in rows of Styrofoam-sandwiched panel houses, waiting for permanent houses to be built.

The challenge is to find a design for a temporary or semi-permanent shelter unit, which can also be incorporated as part of a permanent housing solution. The material used for the temporary or semi-permanent housing solution can thus be recycled into permanent use, resulting in great cost saving, and environmental protection.

APPENDIX

The objective of the competition is to unearth good ideas to benefit the Marine Terrace community and envision how the ground plan at blocks may be used.

THE SITE

Blk 51 Marine Terrace faces the main road of Marine Parade, and is situated 2 blocks away from Marine Parade Town Council, Marine Parade Hawker Centre and a central plaza. Existing facilities in the area include a Family Service Centre, barrier-free access features, void deck shops, playgrounds, reflexology spots, and community gardens at other blocks in the vicinity.

Blk 51 is a rental block, housing seniors, families and singles. Within the estate, there are residents who work within the estate as cleaners, helpers, amongst working parents and mothers. Retired residents congregate at chess areas during the day, or at the neighborhood shops. Community activities such as excursions, exercise groups, line dancing, taichi, active ageing and other social programmes are run by the Town Council & Family Service Centre.

In the future, there are plans to create a Senior Activity Centre at a section of the void deck. As such, to preserve space for void deck events such as weddings and funerals, the allotted area for the competition is at the lift landing and grass patch in front of the block facing the car park.

I Disegni di Carlo Scarpa per la Biennale di Venezia
Architetture e Progetti (1948–1968)

Carlo Scarpa (Venice, 1906–1978) is considered one of the most important architects of the twentieth century. His prolific career includes designs for single houses, urban interventions in historic town centres, landscape solutions, museum projects, exhibition design, interior design, and industrial design. Scarpa’s projects and built works are studied by architects and students throughout the world and his decorative style has become a model for architects wishing to revive craft and luscious materials in a contemporary manner. Scarpa was awarded many prizes both in Italy and abroad, and many exhibitions were organised in his honour.

In 2001, the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage acquired Scarpa’s personal archive for the MAXXI collections, and it is currently preserved at the Archives Centre of “MAXXI Architettura.”

This exhibition, conceived and organised by “MAXXI_Museo Nazionale delle Arti del XXI secolo” in Rome (National Arts Museum of the XXI Century), showcases Scarpa’s works, commissioned by the Venice Biennale, from 1948 to 1968, through twelve exhibits that reproduce thirty-six drawings selected out of the huge number of those preserved in the professional archive. Realised and unrealised works, many of which are still unknown to the public, witness the close, longstanding and significant cooperation between Scarpa and the Venice Biennale.

“If I have to think of a rigorous architecture, I will think of Tuscan architecture as I am Byzantine.” Scarpa describes himself in this way, with modesty, in the video-documentary at this exhibition. The master, in his own voice, shares his ideas on the profession of architects and on the city of Venice.

In conjunction with the Carlo Scarpa exhibition, Luca Molinari, Architect and Critic, will be giving a special bonus talk during the ArchiFest Forum on Tuesday 20 Oct, 9.30am at the Drama Centre.

About the MAXXI

The MAXXI_Museum of 21st Century Arts is a foundation created by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities. It is the first national museum dedicated to contemporary creativity, designed as a multidisciplinary space committed to experimentation and innovation in the arts and architecture. The programming of its activities – exhibitions, workshops, conferences, laboratories, performances, presentations, and educational activities – mirrors the museum’s vocation of being not only a space for the conservation and presentation of its collections, but above all a laboratory for artistic experimentation and production that gives voice to the different languages of contemporariness.

The MAXXI consists of two museums: MAXXI art and MAXXI architecture. The permanent collections of these two museums grow through direct acquisitions, as well as trough commissions, thematic competitions, awards for young artists, donations, and permanent loans. At the moment, the MAXXI art collection consists of over three hundred pieces, including works by Boetti, Clemente, Kapoor, Kentridge, Merz, Penone, Pintaldi, Richter, and Warhol.

The MAXXI architecture collection includes the drawing archives of masters of twentieth-century Italian architecture, such as Carlo Scarpa, Aldo Rossi, and Pierluigi Nervi, projects and works by contemporary architects such as Toyo Ito, Italo Rota, and Giancarlo De Carlo, as well as a collection of photographs by Basilico, Barbieri, Jodice, and Guidi.

In addition to the two museums, the MAXXI also features an auditorium, a library, and a media library specialised in art and architecture, a bookshop, a cafeteria, a bar/restaurant, and galleries for temporary exhibitions, performances, and educational activities. The large public square designed in front of the museum is planned to host artworks and live events.

The MAXXI aims to become a point of reference for public and private institutions in Italy and abroad, as well as for artists, architects, and the general public.

The Architecture of the MAXXI

The MAXXI, designed by Zaha Hadid (winner of the international design competition) is located in the Rome neighbourhood of Flaminio, on the site of the former Montello barracks. The architectural complex – over 27,000 square metres – is integrated with the urban fabric of the city, to which it offers a new, articulated, and “permeable” plaza, wrapped by the innovative and spectacular forms. An external pedestrian path follows the shape of the building, slipping below its cantilevered volumes. It opens onto a large plaza that restores an urban connection, interrupted for almost a century by the former military structure, offering visitors a space for rest and leisure.

A large, full-height atrium leads to the museum’s recreation spaces, the cafeteria and the bookshop, and the auditorium and galleries that host rotating displays of the two museums’ permanent collections, exhibitions, and cultural events. A decisive architecture predominates in the public square and the atrium, while the galleries are characterised by a more sober quality. Materials such as glass, steel, and concrete give the exhibition spaces a neutral appearance, while moveable panels ensure the flexibility of exhibition layouts. The fluid and sinuous forms, and the variation and overlap of different levels determine – thanks also to the modulated use of natural light ¬– a spatial and functional pattern of great complexity, offering itineraries and views that are constantly different and unexpected.

The fundamental character of the architectural and structural project consists of the use of the walls as spatial ordering elements. The interiors of the galleries, almost linear, are delimited by couples of parallel walls that follow the building’s longitudinal movement. Plasterboard connected to the concrete walls creates the technical cavity that contains the museum’s complex mechanical systems.

The roof system is a particularly complex element, in technological and mechanical terms. It integrates exterior glazing, complex light shading devices (blinds, louvres, etc) and artificial lighting systems, a system to control temperature and humidity, and tracks to hang panels. The vertical blades that characterise the roof system are realised in steel and covered with a finishing material. The glass roof is protected on the exterior by a steel mesh that screens light and ensures easy maintenance. All vertical connections, including the columns supporting the cantilevered volumes, are constructed in steel.

This National Museum-originated exhibition will look at various depictions of 19th century Singapore, examining their meanings and representations. The various works will reveal the topography of the Singapore landscape in the 19th century with views of places such as the harbour, Singapore River, Fort Canning Hill, and Raffles Place, as well as depictions of the cosmopolitan trade town and Singapore’s rural scenes. Taking an approach that is both chronological and thematic, this exhibition will feature around 200 artefacts from the museum’s collection, a significant number of which were acquired in recent years and have never before shown in Singapore.

Colin Seah, Ministry of Design (PUSH Award Recipient)

Khoo Poh Bin, DCA Architects (PUSH Award Recipient)
Presentation on One George Street

Mr Khoo Poh Bin holds a BA Honors degree in Architecture and RIBA Pt II Post Graduate Diploma obtained in 1992. After his studies, he worked in the London before settling down in Singapore in 1994.  He joined DCA Architects in 1996 and was made Director in 2002.

He is a registered Architect with the Board of Architects in Singapore since 2000 and also a member of the Singapore Institute of Architects with over 15 years experience in design, design development and overseeing a diversity of projects in Commercial, High-rise Residential, Institutional, Retail and Master Planning both locally and abroad.

Judges Citation on One George Street: The choice of locating a void at the 5th level is a fantastic idea; it provides a commanding view of the Singapore river. This sky terrace reflected the “blue and green” from the river in its artful integration of indoor and outdoor landscape. The ground landscaping follows the same synergy, excelling in its attempt to relate to Hong Lim Green. This building makes a bold statement in the Singapore skyline. The judges particularly like the landscape design which avoided conventional rectangular geometry to feature smooth flowing lines. To be able to get that much landscape into a cubic building signifies a great use of space. Good use of water gel in the soil to keep it moist in the dry condition of the higher elevations.

Jeffery Ho, Surbana International Consultants
Project - Zayed Global City (Best Overseas Planning Award and Best Urban Design Award)

His other professional involvements include serving as an expert panel member in government agencies, an external examiner in NUS Masters Program in urban design, an architect mentor to NUS architecture students, and a city planning advisor to the City of Jinjiang in Fujian Province.

Chan Ee Mun, WOHA Architects
Project - Newton Suites (Best Skyrise Greenery Award)

Chan Ee Mun is a senior associate of WOHA, a regional design practice based in Singapore. He has been associated with WOHA for the past 10 years as project leader for key residential, commercial, institutional and hospitality projects.

Graduating from the National University of Singapore, Ee Mun has returned to his alumni as a visiting design tutor at the Department of Architecture.

Judges Citation on Newton Suites: This scheme made good use of landscape in a fairly tight site (e.g. green walls on the exterior of condo, residential block, exterior of car park and pool side). The provision of greenery in communal space (i.e. skyrise gardens) contributes to the lush environment. The green walls surrounding the car park structure soften an otherwise harsh façade to its neighbours while the vertical greenery that extends 30 floors up the building adds a dramatic touch to the building. Maintenance of the greenery is taken into consideration, where the green wall can be accessed via the escape staircase landing on every floor.  It is a commendable effort for Newton Suites to achieve a green area which is 130% of its site area.

Henry Steed, ICN Design International
Project - Sentosa Cove Arrival Plaza (SILA Design Award)

Angelene Chan, DP Architects
Project - Republic Polytechnic (Best Green Innovation Award)

In a society where education and the pursuit of knowledge are often key pathways to success and personal growth, selected major educational projects by DP Architects attempt to question, explore and re-define the vital role of architectural design in education.

A comparative study and discourse of selected educational facilities to explore and elucidate the significance of differing strategies and creative processes, each project marks a milestone in Singapore’s educational landscape and have in common a clear intention to transcend prevailing conventions to become contemporary academic institutions for the continual pursuit of knowledge.

The lecture will examine and explore selected realized and unrealized designs for key educational institutions in Singapore. With differing design briefs and critical approaches, the designs are a reflection of the evolution of educational paradigms locally. Nevertheless, the designs share in common an intention to craft an enduring yet vital architecture for the incubation of young minds and the continuous pursuit of knowledge.

The partners/sponsors for the PUSH Awards are Geberit and DesignSingapore Council. The Designers Forum is a seminar series organised by the Singapore Institute of Architects. For more information about the PUSH Awards, please visit the PUSH 2009 website.
